IMPT. INFO! Beginning Monday, October 5th, 2009, the chorus will be meeting at:
La Mesa First Methodist Church
4690 Palm Avenue
La Mesa, CA 91941
The building is only a few blocks west of our previous meeting place, at the intersection of Lemon and Palm.
If you're a woman who enjoys singing and lives in San Diego County, you can join us. We're the California Note Catchers,
a chapter of Harmony, Inc., which is an international barbershop organization.
What Does Our Group Do?
Our main goal is to sing and to have fun doing it, but we also perform at local and community venues and we work hard
to perfect the songs we perform. Even if you don't have an outstanding voice, or if you do and are afraid your voice will
overpower others, our chorus can use you! You don't have to read music either. A lot of us don't, but if
you really want to learn, our director will be glad to teach you. Her method is logical and easy, I took
her music reading class myself this year! She is also available immediately following rehearsals, from 9-9:30p, to
help with trouble spots in the music or with any other music related problems.
Just What Is Barbershop?
So, you love singing, but you aren't sure exactly what barbershopping is? After all, we're women, so there'll be no handlebar
moustaches or striped jackets. Well, barbershoppers are people who enjoy harmonizing together. Barbershoppers also sing
a capella, that is, without accompaniment. Some barbershoppers in our chorus also form quartets. There are four parts
in barbershop music: tenor, lead, baritone and bass. We sing a variety of music that has been arranged in the barbershop style;
you'd be surprised at some of the tunes we have in our repertoire! There's Christmas music, patriotic music, traditional barbershop
music and more.
How Can I Become a Member?
Just come to a rehearsal; we have guest music books so you can join right in! We rehearse on Monday nights, from 7-9
pm at the La Mesa First Methodist Church at 4690 Palm Avenue in La Mesa. When you arrive, be sure to connect with Anne,
our membership person, who will get you set up. Once you're sure our group is for you, Anne will help
you fill out the forms. There is a one-time initiation fee and there are monthly dues, which help us support our
parent organization, Harmony, Inc.and allow us to provide costume accessories and other items needed to run our chapter, as
well.
